Over the past year, the Bible Society of Malawi carried out a landmark Sign Language Translation Project, taking an important step toward ensuring that Deaf people can engage with God’s Word in a language they fully understand.
During this period, a dedicated translation team worked on 429 verses drawn from 12 Bible stories, carefully translating Scripture into Malawi Sign Language. This work was not simply about converting words into signs- it was about conveying meaning, emotion, and truth in a way that speaks directly to the hearts of Deaf people.
Across the world, people speak many languages. While the message of the Bible remains the same, it becomes truly powerful when it is communicated in a language people understand best. For Deaf communities, written text alone is often not enough. Although many Deaf people in Malawi can read, written language may be difficult to interpret accurately because it is not their first language. Sign language is their heart language.
Through sign language translation, Deaf people are now able to see, understand, and experience the Bible clearly- free from misunderstanding and confusion. God’s Word comes alive through visual expression, allowing Deaf believers to engage deeply with Scripture, grow in faith, and participate fully in the life of the Church.
This project reflects a core biblical truth: God desires everyone, without exception, to know His Word. Language should never be a barrier to encountering Scripture.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Partnerships for Greater Impact

The next phase of the Sign Language Translation Project focuses on building strong partnerships. The Bible Society of Malawi is seeking collaboration with the Government, local organizations, and international partners who share a commitment to inclusion and accessibility.
Through these partnerships, we aim to:
- Expand the scope of Sign Language Scripture translation
- Improve the quality and reach of translated materials
- Ensure more Deaf people across Malawi can access God’s Word in their own language
Together, we can ensure that the Deaf community is no longer left on the margins of Bible engagement-but is fully included in God’s story.
